Track 9: Point Pleasant

Point Pleasant, West Virginia, is perhaps my favorite place in the world. I visited it in 2024 with Trevor, Kallie, and another friend, and it was one of the best trips I've ever been on. Not only is it a very nice little Southern town, full of friendly people and good food, but it is home to the Mothman. I of course had to write a song about the Mothman for The Unearthly, and this is perhaps my favorite song on the album.

The intro and chorus riffs were inspired by the W.A.S.P. song "Babylon's Burning," which has a cool lead melody at the beginning. When I learned how to play it, I played the melody on the G-string with an open D played alongside each note, which I used for these licks. Megadeth did something similar on "A Secret Place." The verse riff is one of the best riffs I've ever written, heavy and groovy yet melodic... I am *very* fond of this song. The solo is pretty simple but is also one of my favorites.

The ringing phone and "hello" in the intro is a reference to Deliverance's "Stay of Execution," which is in turn a reference to Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime." The outro is a reference to The Mothman Prophecies, the 2002 film inspired by John Keel's book of the same name.
