Track 1: Something Wicked (Clockwork Devilry)

"Something Wicked (Clockwork Devilry)" was written about halfway through the creative process as a short little intro track to set the tone of the record. A lot of bands I enjoy have minute-long (or less!) intros to their albums, such as "Prelude" on Theocracy's self-titled or "Invocation of Apocalyptic Evil" on DragonForce's Valley of the Damned. I decided to do the same for Witch Engine's debut, and retrieved some old lyrics I had cooked up while on lunch at work back in high school. I had realized that the Shakespearean line "something wicked this way comes" can be read to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," which I then rewrote into the riff of this song to sound a bit freakier. I recall being on lunch with Kallie and making her read the first draft of the lyrics back in 2020!

This was the first song that we played together as a band. We played through it in my basement on Wednesday, July 31st, 2024 - you can see the footage at the top of this page! It's a little rough but I think it sounds great for being our first time playing together.
